Connection via MADI for multi-channel audio

MADI, or Multichannel Audio Digital Interface, is a multichannel audio interface standard designated AES10 by the Audio Engineering Society (AES). It defines the data format for a multichannel digital audio interface. The ATEM Microphone Converter’s MADI output integrates the four analog inputs as MADI channels 1, 2, 3, and 4. The ATEM Microphone Converter also includes a MADI input that allows you to link multiple converters when you need to route more than four audio channels over a single MADI connection. Thus, when one converter is connected to the input of another converter, the upstream converter will overlay its four channels onto the four channels of the downstream converter.

Innovative analog-to-digital conversion

Each analog input channel includes an extremely low-noise, fixed-gain preamp designed to provide a wide dynamic range audio ADC. Because this design eliminates the need for a separate analog microphone preamp, there are no audible clicks or unwanted noise at the input. The ATEM Microphone Converter’s design departs from conventional audio industry practices that use a single audio ADC. Instead, each input provides analog-to-digital conversion, and the eight wide dynamic range audio ADCs work together to deliver an ultra-wide dynamic range audio ADC. As a result, each channel boasts a dynamic range of 131 dB(A) and extremely low distortion of 0.002%.

Very low background noise of -129 dBV

One of the classic problems with microphone converters is the introduction of higher noise floor at the point where electrical noise is generated in the preamps. The ATEM Microphone Converter eliminates this problem by using a very different design, where the input is converted directly with an ultra-wide dynamic range converter. This allows you to route the RAW audio to the mixer, which can then apply the necessary gain to achieve an appropriate audio level. As a result, you avoid the noise introduced by analog gain staging and benefit from an extremely low, fixed noise floor of -129 dBV, regardless of the digital gain applied. You can then apply digital gain control in completely inaudible ±0.1 dB increments.

Use the MADI input on ATEM mixers to add multiple microphones or external audio mixers. Setup is easy: simply plug the Blackmagic Design ATEM Microphone Converter into the MADI port of the ATEM Television Studio. It can also be daisy-chained to use even more sources. Each converter has four selectable analog mic/line inputs with 48V phantom power. It delivers excellent audio quality, minimal background noise, extended dynamic range, and very low distortion. Each input also features eight separate ADCs that work together to extend the dynamic range. Finally, it includes an HDMI monitoring output with scrolling audio waveforms.
