Introducing the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is a bright ultra-wide-angle lens for mirrorless cameras, designed primarily for astrophotography, landscape and architecture.

It combines a 14mm with a maximum aperture of F1.4, a combination announced as a world first outside of fisheye lenses at launch in June 2023. This aperture targets night scenes with fine points of light, particularly starry skies, where sagittal coma must remain contained to the periphery of the image.

The optical formula uses 19 elements in 15 groups, including one SLD glass, three FLD glass, and four aspherical lenses. Multi-layer coatings minimize ghosting and flare. The front lens features a water- and oil-repellent coating, useful outdoors when moisture or marks on the front surface become critical.

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art incorporates an HLA linear AF motor for fast, quiet, and precise autofocus. It also features an aperture ring, an aperture ring lock switch, an assignable AFL button, an MFL button, a focus mode switch, and a dust- and splash-resistant construction.

Case studies

  • Astrophotography with Milky Way, pinpoint stars and long exposures on a tripod.
  • Night landscape with ridges, starry sky and wide foreground at 14mm.
  • Exterior architecture, when space is limited and a very wide angle is required.
  • Interior photography in dark or confined spaces.
  • Daytime landscape with wide field of view and control of unwanted reflections.
  • Environmental portrait incorporating extensively the surrounding environment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art suitable for long night exposures?

Yes. It incorporates an MFL switch that locks the manual focus at the chosen position, in order to prevent unintentional movement of the ring during a long exposure.

2. How do I mount the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art on a tripod?

The lens has a removable tripod mount compatible with Arca-Swiss. This collar helps to balance the whole assembly, especially since the lens is heavier at the front.

3. Can filters be used with this ultra-wide-angle lens?

Yes. A rear filter holder is provided for gelatin filters, with a locking mechanism. The special front cap can also accommodate two rear filters for transport.

4. Does the objective include the use of a lens heater?

Yes. A support device prevents the heating system from moving in front of the lens and causing vignetting at the periphery of the image.

5. What shooting assistance functions are available?

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens features an aperture ring, a ring lock, an assignable AFL button, an MFL button, and a focus mode switch. AF assist is indicated for the Sony E-mount.
