Introducing the Sony BURANO CineAlta camera

The Sony BURANO CineAlta is a versatile, lightweight, and compact full-frame 8K cinema camera with 16 stops of aperture and image stabilization for PL and E mount lenses. BURANO represents a new camera concept, taking the superior image quality and user-friendliness of the VENICE and reimagining it to be easily configurable for solo or team production.

Sony’s most technologically advanced camera, it’s 33% lighter than the VENICE 2, more energy-efficient, and compatible with various media. Expect uncompromising image quality, wherever you are, regardless of your team size.

Indeed, its large 36×24 mm full-frame image sensor delivers high-quality images with a rich color gamut. It enables beautiful bokeh and dynamic wide-angle shots that only a full-frame sensor can provide. It offers 8K image quality with a maximum resolution of 8632 x 4856 and, thanks to oversampling, can produce phenomenally high-quality 4K content.

Despite its compact dimensions, the Sony BURANO CineAlta offers internal recording in X-OCN LT* format, as well as the new XAVC H format and the industry-proven XAVC-I standard format. (X-OCN is Sony’s compressed RAW format that records everything the 8.6K sensor can capture in a linear, wide-perspective 16-bit file rich in tonal gradations).

March 2025: Firmware 2.0

The BURANO Version 2.0 firmware, scheduled for release in March 2025, brings new recording formats (3.8K Full Frame cropped up to 120 fps, 1.9K up to 240 fps, and 24.00 fps in X-OCN 16:9 mode), a 1.8x desqueeze option , and various high-frequency modes, along withimprovements to monitoring, metadata , and usability. It also offers advanced exposure tools, enhanced compatibility with professional accessories, and features for live and multicam recording.
