Description
Introducing the FujiFilm GFX Eterna 55
The Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 is the first Fujifilm camera designed specifically for professional medium/wide format video. It combines the advanced technical features of the GFX system (sensor, film simulations) with dedicated cinematic functions (PL/G mount, variable ND filter, cinematic recording options, etc.). It is intended for film shoots, cinema, advertising, or any audiovisual project requiring a wide range of format, color, and workflow options.
Sensor and formats
The FujiFilm GFX Eterna 55 is equipped with a large-format 102-megapixel HS CMOS II sensor, measuring 43.8 × 32.9 mm. This sensor, with its native 4:3 aspect ratio, offers a capture area 1.75x larger than traditional Super 35, providing an image rich in detail and a natural bokeh particularly valued in film production.
The camera supports a wide variety of professional recording formats. In addition to Open Gate 4:3 mode, it offers Super 35, 2.39:1 anamorphic, and formats optimized for FUJINON GF. It records up to DCI 4K at 30 fpsand allows shooting in Open Gate 4:3 at 3.8K at 48 fps, providing ideal flexibility for film and advertising workflows.
Colorimetry, dynamic range, LUTs
The GFX ETERNA 55 offers a dynamic range of over 14.5 stops, enabling faithful capture of highlights and shadows, even in extreme contrast conditions. Thanks to its dual ISO base (ISO 800 and ISO 3200), the camera delivers excellent low-light performance while minimizing digital noise.
It includes 20 FUJIFILM film simulations , faithful to the brand’s most iconic film stocks (including ETERNA, ACROS, PROVIA, CLASSIC CHROME, etc.). Furthermore, the user can import up to 16 custom 3D LUTs , directly applicable to Log F-Log2 or F-Log2 C profiles , thus facilitating monitoring or pre-grading on set.
Filtering and mounting
For optimal exposure control, the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 incorporates a variable electronic ND filter ranging from ND 0.6 to ND 2.1, equivalent to 2 to 7 stops. The adjustment is smooth and ultra-precise, in 0.15-stop increments, ideal for shooting without interrupting the recording or changing the aperture.
It also features an optical low-pass filter (OLPF), a new addition to the GFX range, which effectively reduces artifacts such as moiré, especially when using LED walls or complex image textures.
In terms of optical compatibility, the camera is natively equipped with a FUJIFILM G mount, but comes with an ARRI PL adapter, allowing the use of professional cinema lenses, with support for Cooke /i.
Screens, display, interface
The GFX ETERNA 55 is designed for professional use in multi-operator filming. It incorporates two 3-inch side touchscreens, with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a brightness of 700 cd/m², ensuring quick and accessible control for both the operator and the camera assistant.
In addition, a 5-inch touchscreen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 2000 cd/m² brightnessis provided for monitoring. Its visibility in bright daylight is perfect for outdoor filming.
Customizable frame guides allow you to configure multiple aspect ratios (1:1, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 17:9, 2.39:1, or even a custom format). Users can modify the line thickness, color, or scale to suit any framing need.
Connectivity, power supply, structure
This camera offers comprehensive connectivity with HDMI outputs (4:2:2 10-bit uncompressed), SDI 12G, Genlock, Timecode, as well as Ethernet, USB-C, 2-pin LEMO power, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. This allows for seamless integration with all professional monitoring, control, and post-production equipment.
It is powered by an internal NP-W235, and allows hot swap when the device is connected to an external source via V-Mount or DC, thus ensuring continuous power during filming.
Weighing approximately 2 kg (body only) and measuring 110.8 × 138.2 × 176.8 mm, the camera remains compact for its category. Its advertised power consumption is 21 W on average, potentially reaching 49 W depending on the configuration.
Case studies
Implementation in narrative shooting: The FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 allows shooting wide shots in Open Gate 4:3 to recreate a very cinematic look, or using anamorphic lenses for 2.39:1 cinematic renderings, while maintaining a wealth of detail thanks to8K DCI for wide shots or cropping in post-production.
Use in advertising / music video: Built-in film simulations, the ability to add 3D LUTs, the electronic ND filter, and the very bright screen make the EFTERNA 55 useful for fast-paced productions that require highly polished visuals on set, without having to correct everything in post.
Outdoor work / events: With a 5 2000 nits screen, variable ND, rugged construction, and G or PL mount lens compatibility, this camera is suitable for shooting in bright light, on outdoor stages, or at events where flexibility and image quality are paramount.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What are the advantages of using the large format sensor of the GFX ETERNA 55 compared to a full-frame or Super 35 sensor?
In widescreen format, you get a larger sensor area (approximately 43.8 × 33.9 mm), which allows for greater depth of field, improved dynamic range, and the ability to capture more light, as well as create more cinematic visuals with smoother background blur. The 4:3 « Open Gate » format also provides more latitude for cropping and visual composition.
-
What codecs and resolutions are available for internal and external recording?
Internally: ProRes 422 HQ/LT/standard, HEVC/H.265 10-bit, H.264, and proxies. Externally via HDMI: 10-bit 4:2:2 uncompressed output or 12-bit RAW depending on the mode. Supported resolutions up to 8K DCI 30 fps, 4K /Open Gate 4:3 up to 48 fps depending on the selected format.
-
Is the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 suitable for productions with a lot of LED lighting or for shooting outdoors in very bright conditions?
Yes, thanks to the variable ND filter (ND0.6 – ND2.1), the large-format sensor, the very bright screens, and the optical low-pass filter to limit moiré. These features contribute to excellent control over exposure, colorimetry, and LED artifacts.
-
How is power and battery management handled during long shoots?
It has an internal NP-W235, and the option to hot-swap it when using an external power supply (V-Mount or DC). This allows power to be maintained without interrupting recording or filming.
-
What are the advantages of the included PL mount compared to the native G mount?
The G mount allows the use of FUJIFILM G lenses, which are often compact and designed for photography and cinematography. The PL adapter allows the use of professional cinema lenses, often with irises, manual focus/zoom rings, and compatibility with standard cinema brands and workflows, opening up the possibility of using a wide variety of high-end lenses for rendering, style, and production consistency.
