Introducing the Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 (Sony E)

The Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 (Sony E) features high optical performance, an ultra-compact, lightweight design, and excellent cost/performance ratio.

Fujifilm’s FUJINON lenses are renowned worldwide for their advanced optical performance and ability to faithfully reproduce filmed scenes. Fujifilm introduces the « MK » lens series to complement its existing « HK/ZK/XK » series, aiming to meet the needs of even the most demanding productions.

With a constant T2.9 aperture, the MK series offers bright optics across the entire zoom range, reducing depth of field and enabling beautiful bokeh effects. These lenses are compatible with E-mount cameras featuring Super 35mm/APS-C sensors and with the X-mount of Fujifilm X-Series digital cameras (APS-C sensors). They deliver advanced optical performance while remaining lightweight and compact, and benefit from a short flange focal distance. The high-level optical and mechanical design of these cinema lenses minimizes focus loss during zooming, as well as optical axis shift and focus pumping (change in the angle of view during focusing), phenomena frequently observed with interchangeable lenses on digital cameras.

These new lenses incorporate three independent mechanical rings for manual adjustment of focus, zoom, and aperture (iris), with click stops in 0.8 mm increments (module). For easy, precise adjustment and greater ease of use, the focus ring rotates 200°.

Advanced optical performance integrated into a compact and lightweight structure

MK lenses boast advanced optical performance and low distortion across the entire frame. Their colorimetry is harmonized with that of other FUJINON CINEMA lenses in the HK/ZK/XK series to simplify calibration when using multiple different lenses.

They have a constant T2.9 aperture across the entire focal range, making it easy to create beautiful bokeh effects with a shallow depth of field. This eliminates the need to readjust lighting levels, thus reducing shooting time.

The MK series lenses are designed for E-mount cameraswith a Super 35mm/APS-C sensorand Fujifilm’s X-mount mirrorless digital cameras (APS-C sensor). Both compact and lightweight, they offer advanced optical performance with a small flange focal distance adjustment range for optimized settings. They are ideal for shooting with a small crew. (The MK18-55mm and MK50-135mm are exclusively for E-mount and weigh approximately 980g.)

Resolution of problems related to the use of interchangeable lenses in the range of digital cameras used in film production

The front focusing group and the zoom group are driven independently of each other to eliminate focus shift during zooming, thus avoiding the need to refocus after a focal length change. This optical and mechanical design prevents any time lag in focus often observed with electrically driven systems.

The front internal focusing device avoids the optical pumping effect (change in field angle during focusing) in order to achieve smooth focusing for a spectacular scene.

The manufacturing technology developed for conventional FUJINON cinema lenses is deployed here to control the shift of the optical axis during zooming in or out, thus ensuring perfect adherence to the permanent frame.

Perfect operability via optics dedicated to cinema

The focus ring benefits from a 200-degree rotation to facilitate focus adjustment with a shallow depth of field when high precision is required.

The lenses are equipped with three independent mechanical rings dedicated to focusing, zooming, and the iris (aperture). These allow for more precise, intuitive, and instantaneous operations than those obtained via an electrical mechanism subject to time lag.

These rings operate on a 0.8M pitch, like all other FUJINON cinema lenses and allow the use of all standard cinema accessories such as the « Follow Focus » for precise and smooth focusing.

The iris adjustment is very smooth, continuous, without jerking or notching, and therefore without mechanical noise.

A standardized design to facilitate operations

  • Equipped with an 85mm diameter front lens, compatible with « matte boxes ».
  • The filter diameter of the MK lenses is 82 mm, simplifying use and exchange between models.
  • The position of the knurled rings (iris, zoom and focus) is identical for all lenses in the MK series, facilitating the use of accessories.
  • Highly versatile, they feature a macro function for -up focusing down to 0.38m for the MK 18-55mm and down to 0.85m for the MK 50-135mm across the entire focal range.
  • They benefit from a « back-focus » allowing adjustment and regulation of the optical back focus (distance between the last lens and the sensor) for optimal adaptation of the camera and lenses, thus exploiting the best optical performance.
