Specifically designed to resolve spatial frequencies with excellent contrast, this lens incorporates three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided and a newly developed XA (extreme aspherical) lens with a surface precision of 0.01 micron, to effectively control aberration, for incredible resolution as well as a remarkable bokeh effect.

Natural images without unwanted color

Chromatic aberration, which can be a problem in telephoto lenses, is completely eliminated by using four ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and two Super ED glass elements. Color fringing is eliminated, allowing the subject to be captured with maximum sharpness.

High-end -up performance

High-end -up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 0.96 m and a maximum magnification of 0.25x is ideal for portraits, macro telephoto shots, and much more. Refinements include ED glass lenses and a floating focus mechanism to control aberration, which can be problematic in -ups.

Autofocus optimized for photos and videos

The two relatively heavy lenses are positioned quickly and precisely by separate actuators: a powerful SSM (supersonic wave motor) actuator for the front group, and a dual linear motor actuator for the rear group. The improved positioning accuracy works with real-time feedback from multiple position sensors to allow the camera’s autofocus system to operate at full capacity.

More refinements for pinpoint autofocus

The dual linear motors in the focusing system play a crucial role in providing a « flickering » actuation for the autofocus contrast-detection system during video recording. An optical system that effectively minimizes field of view variation, along with quiet mechanical operation, further enhances focusing performance, making it ideal for both video and still photography.

The rigid design with a fixed focal length during zoom and focus contributes to excellent handling in all shooting situations. Focus lock buttons can maintain focus even during continuous autofocus, and a focal range limiter selector can be used to preselect a range of focus distances for maximum autofocus speed.

High-performance image stabilization is integrated directly into the lens for sharp, blur-free images with a wide range of subjects. The heavy stabilizing lens is driven by a linear motor, ensuring precise and rapid stabilization. 5-axis image stabilization becomes available when used with -series models that feature built-in image stabilization.

To make the most of the built-in image stabilization system in all possible shooting situations, the SEL70200GM features switchable MODE 2 stabilization, which allows image stabilization to be used with panoramic photos for greater clarity and impact.
