Capture decisive moments
The Sony Alpha 6400’s autofocus system inherits many technologies from Sony’s full-frame cameras, including the a9, a7R III , and a7 III. The a6400 features 425 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points. These are densely distributed across the entire image area, covering approximately 84% of the frame. This high-performance AF system is paired with a BIONZ X image processing engine. This combination allows the camera to achieve ultra-fast autofocus in 0.02 seconds and maintain subject lock. « Real-time Eye AF »
The Sony Alpha 6400 incorporates new Real-time Eye AF technology. This feature uses AI-based object recognition to detect and process eye data in real time. This improves the accuracy, speed, and tracking performance of Eye AF. In all autofocus modes, the camera now automatically detects the subject’s eyes and activates Eye AF with a half press of the shutter button. In AF-C or AF-A mode, your subject’s preferred eye can be selected as the focus area. Choices include Auto, Right Eye, and Left Eye. A Switch Right/Left Eye function can also be assigned to a custom setting. This technology allows the photographer to focus solely on composition, knowing that the subject’s eye will be in sharp focus.
« Real-time Tracking »
Sony’s « Real-time Tracking » technology also makes its debut on the a6400. This mode uses Sony’s algorithm, which includes AI-based object recognition, and processes color, subject distance (depth), and pattern (brightness) as spatial information. This ensures superb results on all subjects. Furthermore, during photography, the AI recognizes and tracks the subject’s eyes in real time with high tracking accuracy. This can be activated with a simple half-press of the shutter button or assigned to a custom function.
In terms of speed, the Sony Alpha 6400 can record up to 11 fps with AF/AE tracking. It also offers up to 8 fps with full AF/AE tracking in silent mode. At each of these speeds, it can record up to 116 JPEG Standard images or 46 compressed RAW images, significantly increasing the chances of capturing the perfect moment.
Image quality
The Sony Alpha 6400 features a 24.2 MP APS-C image sensor and an enhanced BIONZ X processor to deliver improved image quality and color reproduction in all shooting conditions. Standard ISO settings go up to 32,000 for both stills and video. These are expandable to 102,400 for stills, with good noise reduction at medium and high sensitivities.
The Sony Alpha 6400 also benefits from most of the image processing algorithms of Sony’s Full Frame cameras, removing noise while preserving resolution and improving texture representation.
4K video recording with Fast Hybrid Autofocus
The Sony Alpha 6400 offers robust video capabilities. It records internal 4K UHD video (3840 x 2160) with full pixel readout. Focusing during video recording is fast and stable thanks to Fast Hybrid AF technology, which allows for easy tracking of the subject, even when an object obstructs the view in front of the camera. This feature makes the Sony Alpha 6400 ideal for vloggers and video creators.
For creating time-lapses, the device has adjustable interval recording between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. The sensitivity of the auto exposure tracking can be adjusted to High, Medium or Low during shooting, which helps to reduce exposure changes.
In addition, for the first time in a Sony APS-C mirrorless camera, this model includes an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, which supports an Instant HDR workflow, allowing HDR (HLG) compatible TVs to play the stunning 4K UHD videos.
Versatility
The a6400 features a 3 LCD screen that tilts 180° and boasts a resolution of 921,600 dots. This allows you to capture photos and videos from any angle! The touchscreen provides intuitive access to functions such as Touch Pad, Touch Focus, Touch Shutter, and Touch Tracking, which quickly activates real-time tracking.
