Introducing the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II
The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II is a lens that brings a host of improvements over its predecessor. The first thing that stands out is its remarkable compactness at just 149mm long. It’s also lighter, weighing only 749g. It also benefits from a shorter minimum focusing distance (only 26cm) thanks to the introduction of a floating focusing element, enabling a high-resolution 0.5x « half-macro » magnification. It also offers superior image quality and high-performance autofocus for both stills and video.
Its sophisticated optical design incorporates 19 elements in 13 groups, including three ED low-dispersion lenses, one ED extra-low dispersion lens, one aspherical lens, and one advanced aspherical lens. It also benefits from Nano AR Coating II, which helps control reflections and ghosting, while the nine-blade rounded diaphragm delivers smooth, soft bokeh.
Equipped with four XD linear motors, two for each of the lens’s focusing groups, the lens is now 20% faster than its predecessor and supports focus tracking while zooming. The new autofocus system also works with the Alpha 1’s high-speed 30fps continuous shooting without blackout, twice the rate of its predecessor.
The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II incorporates optical image stabilization, offering improved image stabilization and greater versatility. It is designed to work in tandem with the camera’s in-body image stabilization system to ensure sharp images when shooting handheld, even at longer focal lengths.
Finally, the lens is compatible with the FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters (available separately). These teleconverters allow for life-size 1:1 macro photography across the entire zoom range.
